Abstract

Until relatively recently, scholarship on Greek drama has been dominated by what might be called an Athenocentric and historicist approach, which aimed to set the surviving texts in their Athenian democratic and political context. This is especially true of Aristophanes, whose works (such as the Knights) are heavily concerned with Athenian politics. New research, however, has shown the Panhellenic elements of Greek drama (as opposed to Athenian drama) and emphasised the importance of the figure of the wanderer or traveller, both within the plays of tragedy and comedy and as part of the persona of historical Greek poets. In this paper, I will demonstrate the importance of the ideology of the wandering poet in a key example, Aristophanes' Frogs. In the process, I hope to show how Aristophanes' works also can be understood in Panhellenic terms.
